Date-based membership pauses
Pause membership benefits for exact dates, with optional payment pausing and duration extension for recurring and one-time memberships.
A date-based pause suspends a member's benefits for an exact calendar range. Use it when the member's absence is naturally described by dates, such as a holiday, injury, temporary relocation, or seasonal closure.
Date-based pauses are the more flexible pause type:
- They work with recurring and one-time memberships.
- Recurring payments can continue or be paused.
- The paused days can count toward the original membership duration or be added back later.
- The pause does not need to begin on a billing date.
For pauses that must cover complete recurring billing periods, see Period-based pauses.
The two independent choices
A date-based pause always suspends benefits. For eligible memberships, you then make two separate decisions.
Pause recurring payments
When enabled, a recurring charge is skipped if its due date falls inside the pause.
- The entire charge is skipped. Thril does not prorate a charge based on the number of paused days.
- Already paid periods are not refunded.
- A charge due before the pause is not skipped, even if its payment processing finishes during the pause.
- If no due date falls within the pause, no charge is skipped.
This option is available only for a recurring membership that has not entered termination.
Extend the membership by the paused time
When enabled, Thril counts the exact paused calendar days and gives them back to the member.
- A one-time membership receives the extra days as soon as the pause ends.
- A recurring membership saves the days for a payment-free extension when the membership eventually ends normally.
- When disabled, the pause still suspends benefits, but no days are added later.
This option is not shown for an indefinite one-time membership because there is no end date to extend.
By default, recurring payments continue and the paused calendar days are added back when extension is available. Review both choices whenever the agreement with the member differs from that default.
Keep the pause within the membership's current validity dates unless you intentionally want the full selected range included in the extension. Thril does not shorten the selected pause to match the membership's active dates. If a one-time pause continues beyond the original expiry, only the part of the extended validity that remains after the pause can be used.
Payment pausing and duration extension are separate. You can keep charging and still add the paused days later, or waive a charge without extending the membership.
The four recurring-membership combinations
| Payments | Duration | What the member receives |
|---|---|---|
| Continue | Not extended | Benefits are unavailable for the selected dates; billing and the original end remain unchanged |
| Continue | Extended | Billing continues; the exact paused days become a payment-free extension later |
| Paused | Not extended | Due dates inside the pause are waived; no extra days are added |
| Paused | Extended | Due dates inside the pause are waived; the exact paused days also become a payment-free extension later |
For a fixed-term recurring contract, every waived renewal still consumes one contract period. The exact calendar-day extension is handled separately. This prevents one waived charge from accidentally creating both a full free billing period and an additional date extension.
How dates and paused days are counted
The start and end dates shown in the portal are inclusive.
| Selection shown to staff | Benefits unavailable | Days added when extension is enabled |
|---|---|---|
| 1-1 July | All of 1 July | 1 day |
| 1-7 July | 1 through 7 July | 7 days |
| 30 July-2 August | 30 and 31 July, 1 and 2 August | 4 days |
Thril counts calendar days in the venue's time zone. This keeps the result stable around daylight-saving time changes.
If an active pause is ended early, Thril counts only the elapsed venue-calendar days. Ending a pause on the same calendar day it began adds zero days.
How payment pausing works
Date-based payment pausing is based on renewal due dates, not on how much of a billing period overlaps the pause.
Example: a short pause can waive a full charge
Suppose a member has a 30-day recurring membership:
Pause: 10-16 August
Renewal due: 12 AugustThe 12 August renewal falls inside the pause, so the full renewal charge is skipped.
Example: a long pause may skip no charge
Pause: 2-20 August
Previous renewal: 1 August
Next renewal: 31 AugustNo renewal due date falls inside the pause. Benefits are suspended, but no charge is skipped.
Example: several due dates can be skipped
If a long pause covers several due dates, each covered renewal is skipped. After each skipped renewal, the next due date advances normally.
What a skipped renewal means in payment history
When a due date is covered by a payment pause:
- No card charge is created.
- No separate payment entry is added for the skipped renewal.
- No introductory or goodwill price period is used.
- The next renewal is scheduled normally.
The unused introductory or goodwill price remains available for a later renewal that is actually charged.
Credits and session cards granted on renewal
Credits and session cards that were already issued remain available during a date pause.
New recurring credits or session cards are not issued when renewal processing completes while the date pause is active, even when recurring payments continue. This can also apply when a charge was due before the pause but finishes processing during it. A skipped grant is not added afterward.
A date-based pause does not refund a period that was already paid and does not cancel a payment that was created before the pause. Handle any agreed refund separately.
Fixed-term recurring memberships
For a fixed-term recurring membership, a skipped charge and an extension affect the contract differently.
Assume the member has five contract periods remaining and a seven-day date pause covers one renewal.
| Choice | Remaining contract periods after the skipped renewal | Days saved for the end |
|---|---|---|
| Pause payments, no extension | 4 | 0 |
| Pause payments and extend duration | 4 | 7 |
| Continue payments and extend duration | Normally decremented by the paid renewal | 7 |
When the final contract period has been processed, Thril adds all saved days to the contractual end.
Example:
Normal contract end: 1 December
First date pause: 7 saved days
Second date pause: 4 saved days
Final membership end: 12 DecemberThe 11 days form one continuous payment-free extension. Benefits and eligible physical access are available during the extension.
Open-ended recurring memberships
An open-ended recurring membership has no contract end to extend immediately.
When Extend the membership by the paused time is enabled:
- Thril saves the exact paused days.
- Normal recurring billing continues after the pause.
- If the member later terminates the membership, required notice periods are handled normally.
- After the final required period, the saved days become a payment-free extension.
If the membership never terminates, the days remain saved and unapplied.
One-time memberships
Date-based pauses also work for memberships purchased with one payment.
One-time membership with an end date
Benefits and access are suspended for the selected dates.
If duration extension is enabled, Thril moves the membership's end date as soon as the pause finishes.
Example:
Original membership end: 31 December
Completed pause: 14 calendar days
New membership end: 14 JanuaryThere are no recurring payments to pause.
Indefinite one-time membership
Benefits and access can still be paused for dates. There is no end date to extend, so the duration-extension option is not available.
Trials and special recurring prices
If payments continue, trial transitions and introductory or goodwill prices work as they normally would.
If a payment pause covers the first renewal after a trial:
- That renewal charge is skipped.
- The trial is considered completed.
- The first fixed contract period is consumed.
- An introductory or goodwill price is not consumed because no charge was created.
The special price can then apply to a later charged renewal.
Ending or cancelling a pause
Delete a scheduled pause
A pause that has not started can be deleted.
- Benefits and access are never suspended.
- No payment is skipped.
- No days are saved.
- It remains identifiable as Cancelled in date-pause history.
Resume an active pause early
An active date pause can be resumed before its planned end.
- Benefits become available again immediately.
- The end is changed to the actual resume time.
- Only elapsed calendar days are saved when extension is enabled.
- When the membership is otherwise eligible, Thril requests physical-access restoration. The connected system may take additional time to update.
- Future renewal due dates are handled normally.
Renewals already skipped during the pause remain skipped. Thril does not create a retroactive charge.
What happens when a membership is terminated
Payment-pausing and benefit-only date pauses are handled differently.
A payment-pausing date pause
Termination ends payment pausing so that required notice-period charges can continue.
- A future payment pause is cancelled before it starts.
- An active payment pause ends at the termination time.
- Any days already earned are saved when extension is enabled.
- Renewals already skipped remain skipped.
- Future notice-period renewals are charged normally.
A benefit-only date pause
A benefit-only pause can continue during the notice period because it does not interfere with required charges.
When the membership normally ends, Thril finishes a benefit-only pause that is already active and includes eligible saved days in the final payment-free extension. Delete any separate pause that is still scheduled to begin after the membership's end.
Payment problems and saved days
Saved pause days are applied when a recurring membership reaches a normal contract or termination end.
They are not used to reactivate a membership that ends because the member failed to complete a required payment. This keeps a previous goodwill extension from overriding an unpaid membership state.
